Cats have lived in the company of people for over 2000 years. Since then, their nutritional habits have not changed much from those of their relatives living in the wild. Throughout the day, cats hunt and kill small prey, which they then eat at their solitary leisure. Cats are true carnivores, i.e. they need meat as the basis of their diet. To meet their nutritional needs, cats must catch 10-12 mice daily!

This has important consequences for the high-quality, healthy diet of our contemporary house cats:

• Their basic diet should have a high proportion of meat
• Sufficient quantities of special nutrients found only in meat (e.g. taurine) must be included in the cat food
• Feeding should reflect the particular nutritional habits of the cats and give them the opportunity to "nibble" throughout the day.
